I still remember the day I saw my first positive pregnancy test result. I could not explain the delight I felt. I am thankful that I immediately took a pregnancy test after missing my period. I was able to get the proper prenatal care I and my baby needed early on.

Homemade Pregnancy Test
A homemade pregnancy test is just like any other conventional pregnancy test. It detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, a hormone produced right after a fertilized egg attaches to your uterine wall. Regardless of what ingredient(s) you use, they all work the same way. The ingredients react with your urine sample, and the reaction depends upon the presence of hCG.
There are a lot of advantages when using a homemade pregnancy test with sugar or any other ingredients easily found in your kitchen or bathroom. For starters, it is quick and convenient.
Each time you miss your period, you can easily grab something at home to find out if you are pregnant or not.
Further, you do not have to go out just to buy a pregnancy test kit. It also guarantees your privacy. There is no need to walk to the counter feeling like everyone is staring at you with some sort of prejudice. This really happens, even at this day and age, especially to young women! A lot of women are hesitant to get tested because they are afraid of what other people might think.
So, a homemade pregnancy test is the best alternative to keep it private and intimate.
Of course, it is also relatively cheap. This is especially true if you are really trying to conceive. You would want to conduct pregnancy tests every now and then, so it is better to opt for a DIY method where you can use items easily available at home.

A lot of women also prefer performing a homemade pregnancy test to save them the hassle of going to their physicians for possibly nothing. At least, should the test indicate negative, there is no need for them to consult their physicians.
These methods were devised by women with a poor or lack of access to conventional pregnancy tests or even proper healthcare. They had to come up with creative ways to determine whether or not they are pregnant. To this day, we are still using them as viable alternatives! Let us find out how each method is performed!
Homemade Pregnancy Test With Sugar
Homemade pregnancy test with sugar is probably the most popular DIY methods. It is also said to be the safest.
To perform this test, you will need the following:
- Sterilized disposable bowl;
- Three tablespoon of sugar; and
- Urine sample
First, put the sugar in the bowl. Then, pee in it. If the sugar dissolves just like how it normally would when mixed with liquid, it indicates a negative result. However, if it clumps, it means that you are pregnant.
The best time to take a homemade pregnancy test with sugar is in the morning, immediately after waking up. The first urine of the day is not diluted, which means that the hCG levels are concentrated as well.

It is not recommended to perform this test any other time of the day. It might give inaccurate results as well.
Other Homemade Pregnancy Tests
1. Baking Soda
To perform a pregnancy test using baking soda, put two tablespoon of it in a clean bowl or container. Then, pee on it. If you notice bubbles— those similar to bubbles found while you open a soda pop, then it means that you are pregnant.
2. Bleach Powder
Using bleach powder is one of the fastest ways to perform a DIY pregnancy test. First, you collect your urine sample in a sterilized container. Then, add bleach powder and mix it properly. Make sure that you prevent the mixture from lumping. If you notice foam forming, it means that you are pregnant. It is negative if there is no foam.
When performing this method, remember to stay back. Inhaling the fumes is not good for your health. You may feel dizzy and nauseous once you inhale it. More importantly, do not touch it. If, by accident, you do, wash your hands with soap and water immediately.
3. Mustard Powder
Mustard powder is known to induce monthly period. Using it to determine pregnancy is quite relatively complex, but it is possible.
First, fill your bathtub with warm water. Then, add ½ to ¾ cup mustard powder. Soak yourself in the mixture for at least 30 minutes, giving enough time for the mustard powder to work on your body. You may take a shower afterwards.
You should have your period within two to three days. Otherwise, you are possibly pregnant.

5. Toothpaste
Any kind of toothpaste will do as long as it is white. Put two tablespoon of it in a sterilized container. Then, add your urine sample. If it becomes frothy or changes color into blue, you are pregnant.
6. Tuna And Vinegar
For this method, you need to pour equal amounts of tuna juice and vinegar in clean container. Then, add ½ cup of your urine sample in the mixture. If its color turns green, it indicates a positive result. If it changes into yellow, it is negative.
7. Vinegar
For this method, you will need a clean plastic container and a small amount of white vinegar. Pour the vinegar in the container then add your urine sample. Mix it properly. If you notice bubbles forming while you mix it, let it stand. Watch closely. If there is a change in color, it indicates a positive result.
8. Wine
Wine has been used to determine pregnancy since the olden days, back when pregnancy test kits were not even a thing yet. It is one of the earliest, most accessible commodity; so, it is no wonder why it belongs to this list up to this day.
To test your urine for hCG presence, put together ½ cup of wine and ½ cup of your urine sample in a clean container. Mix it and wait for 10 minutes until it reacts. If the original color of the mixture changes, you are likely pregnant.
Accuracy Of Homemade Pregnancy Tests
It is important to note that a homemade pregnancy test with sugar, baking soda, bleach powder, or any other ingredient is not 100% reliable. It is only the most convenient and most reliable way to determine pregnancy. However, it is not as accurate as conventional pregnancy tests.
The best way to determine pregnancy is still using a pregnancy test kit or visiting your physician to get tested by blood or by urine. Keep in mind that homemade pregnancy tests are just alternatives.
To Wrap It Up… Homemade Pregnancy Test with Sugar
There are a lot of ways to tell whether you are pregnant or not. While you may opt for a home pregnancy test from a local drugstore or convenience store, there is still something thrilling about making your own.
There are also several advantages using a DIY pregnancy test. Of course, it is convenient, quick, readily available, cheap, and intimate. The only disadvantage is that it is not as accurate as conventional methods. Nonetheless, there is definitely merit to it.
With a DIY pregnancy test, you can use ingredients that are almost always available at home. Baking soda, bleach powder, mustard powder, soap, sugar, toothpaste, tuna and vinegar, vinegar, and wine are just some of the most widely used ingredients.
A homemade pregnancy test with sugar is said to be the safest since it would not produce any harmful odor. At the same time, it is best to avoid using bleach powder. Ideally, it should be the last resort— when nothing is really available and you badly need to know. The resulting fumes are harmful when inhaled; so, using it to determine pregnancy is really delicate.
